Lip reader spots awkward Donald Trump question after Germany jersey gesture
Donald Trump shared an awkward moment with German chancellor Freidreich Merz after he gifted the United States President a personalized jersey for this birthday.
Merz presented Trump with a custom German national team soccer jersey during a meeting at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France on Tuesday, a belated birthday gift for the US president after he turned 80 years old on Sunday, June 14. It came after a lip reader spotted Trump’s comment to a UFC fighter who made a shocking Michelle Obama slur.
The meeting took place during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, and features Germany as one of the tournament favorites.
According to Nicola Hickling, Expert Analyst & Professional Lip Reader, Trump didn’t even thank Merz for the jersey, which had his last name and the number ‘47’ on the back, a reference to Trump being the 47th president of the United States.
Instead, Trump questioned why the German chancellor was not in the US supporting his nation’s men’s soccer team before shaking his hand, posing for a picture, rolling up the jersey, and putting it on the table.
"Is this the color of your shirt?” Trump asked Merz, according to Hickling.
"It's a good shirt, but maybe you could show your support by being there."
"I like it. I see my name and forty-seven is on it,” added the US president. “Let's get to it.”
Trump and Merz are just two of the leaders attending the 52nd G7 summit in France, where the Israel-Iran conflict and the war in Ukraine are among the key issues on the agenda. The summit began on Monday, June 15, and runs until Wednesday, June 17.
One day before flying to France, Trump celebrated his 80th birthday by hosting UFC Freedom 250 at the White House.
The first-of-its-kind event proved to be quite the spectacle as seven fights were contested on the South Lawn of the White House in front of Trump, his family members, and hundreds thousands of others on the premises in the nation’s capital.
The fight card got off to a rocky start after a slight weather delay and Trump grabbing UFC CEO Dana White as they made a grand entrance from the Oval Office. The event also saw UFC commentator Joe Rogan’s tie go viral for all the wrong reasons in front of Trump.
It came just days after the World Cup officially kicked off, in which the United States won its opening match 4-1 over Paraguay on Friday night in Los Angeles. Two days later, Germany trounced Curacao 7-1 in their group stage opener in Houston, Texas.
