CNN breaks news on Trump Iran ceasefire - and it's bad news for the president
CNN interrupted its regular programming to bring viewers urgent breaking news regarding the US-Iran conflict, which has been ongoing since late February.
The network reported that US President Donald Trump, who made a disturbing sex comment on stage that silenced the alarmed audience, has conceded control of the Strait of Hormuz to Iran, with anchor Erin Burnett revealing that Iran will impose a toll on every vessel passing through as part of the ceasefire deal.
This development represents a significant setback for Donald Trump, who has been locked in a standoff with Iran over control of the Strait throughout the conflict. It comes after Melania Trump was left humiliated by a screaming kid's 3-word comment as he pointed at her.
Burnett opened as the breaking news banner appeared on screen: "Breaking news, Iran's Foreign Minister has just responded to Trump's ceasefire announcement, and I want to read part of it to you." Confirming that an agreement had been struck, Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi wrote: "If attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations."
He added: "For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran's Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations."
Iran's Supreme National Security Council released a separate, more detailed statement, which the CNN anchor displayed to the camera, indicating that the ceasefire might be extended beyond the initial two-week period if talks progress positively.
After reading portions of the statement, Burnett continued: "It sounds like in a translation acknowledgment of Iran saying they control the Strait of Hormuz. Zachary Cohen, a senior reporter for CNN, joined the discussion, informing viewers: "The piece of this about the Strait of Hormuz really is the most important thing that jumps out immediately.", reports the Express.
He continued: "It's important for people to remember that the Strait of Hormuz was not controlled in a literal sense by Iran prior to those joint military strikes which kicked off these entire conflicts several weeks ago."
"Iran responded to the strikes by closing the Strait of Hormuz, and it appears this ceasefire is at least part of the legitimization of Iran's control of that key waterway."
The development came hours after Trump shared a troubling message on Truth Social which stated: "A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will."
The US leader also described the deadline as marking "one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the world".
