Red Dead Redemption rides onto PS5, Xbox Series X, and Netflix
Hot off the press, the original Red Dead Redemption is getting a remastered rerelease on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and mobile devices. Yes, that's right, you'll get to play the award-winning John Marshton tale from the comfort of your bus ride to work!
In a newswire post on Rockstar's website, the developer announced the release was created in collaboration with Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games. For current generation consoles, you can expect some new bells and whistles:
Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5
60 frames per second
HDR support
Enhanced image quality
Up to 4K resolution
Switch 2
DLSS
HDR
Mouse controls
60 frames per second at a high resolution (not listed)
On December 2, the epic Western adventures Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare will be available for the latest mobile devices and on current generation consoles — with free upgrades, the ability to carry over game progress, and a number of enhancements.
Step into the events immediately following the blockbuster Red Dead Redemption 2, in the critically acclaimed tale of John Marston's journey to bury his blood-stained past. In its zombie-horror companion Undead Nightmare, fight to find a cure for the zombie plague that has overrun the frontier. All these new versions feature the complete single-player experiences of both games, and also include bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition.
Even better, current owners of the game on PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One backwards compatibility version will get the upgrade for free. That's right, Rockstar is releasing this update for no extra charge on top of the game you already own — something we don't usually see from the developer, so kudos to them.
Mobile and subscription ports
What makes this news even more impressive is the addition of mobile ports. I remember playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and thinking to myself, "This has to be the limit, right?" Never in my dreams did I imagine I'd be playing something as complex as Red Dead Redemption.
I know, I know, we've been getting some fascinating mobile ports like Assassin's Creed Mirage, but come on, Red Dead Redemption on phones before GTA VI? Nobody saw that one coming.
If you're a Netflix subscriber, you also have access to their mobile store. Your subscription will grant access to the mobile version of Red Dead Redemption at no extra charge. So, if you're like me and wary that your 3-year-old device can't run it, there's no strings attached.
Gamers who are subscribed to GTA+ will also have access to the game once it launches. As will PlayStation 5 players who have PlayStation Plus. Why does every subscription end with a plus these days?
