Kylian Mbappe makes Real Madrid history,France star bags brace against Barcelona
WHAT HAPPENED?
The France international scored from the penalty spot and then on the counter-attack to put Madrid 2-0 up at Barcelona on Sunday. According to Opta Jose, that was the 26-year-old's 38th goal this term - meaning nobody has notched more goals for Madrid in their debut season.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Mbappe has now overtaken the record previously held by Ivan Zamorano (37 goals in 45 games) back in the 1992/93 season. And to think, the former Paris Saint-Germain was heavily criticised at the start of the campaign following his summer move to Santiago Bernabeu.
DID YOU KNOW?
Unfortunately for Mbappe and Madrid, Barcelona roared back with four first-half goals through Eric Garcia, Lamine Yamal, and a Raphinha brace. A win for Barca would practically guarantee them the league title as it would put them seven points clear with three games to go. Yet Mbappe could still end season with the Pichichi award. The France star currently tops the goal charts in Spain ahead of Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski.
WHAT NEXT?
After this match, Mbappe's Madrid host Mallorca in La Liga on Wednesday night.
